Space Marine 2 Melee Combat Guide — Weapons, Parrying, and Survival Tips

Space Marine 2 is not a game you can button-mash your way through. Once you understand how parrying, executions, and Gun Strikes work together, your survival rate changes dramatically. This guide covers everything a first-time campaign player needs to know about melee combat — weapon types, core mechanics, and how to fight smarter.

1. Melee Weapons — Types and Characteristics

There are 5 melee weapons available in the campaign. Each differs in speed, range, and combo patterns, so choosing the right one for the situation matters.

WeaponSpeedCharacteristicsRecommended For
ChainswordMediumBalanced speed, damage, and cleave. Best all-rounder. Most beginner-friendlyLarge groups of small enemies, general use
Combat KnifeFastFastest of the 5. Moveset changes with each heavy attack. Excels at single targets, limited rangeTaking down one strong enemy
Power SwordMediumTwo stances: Speed Style (fast single-target) and Power Style (wide cleave). Hold melee button to switchMixed encounters with crowds and elites, boss fights
Power FistSlowCharged heavy attack releases a ranged shockwave. High single-target damage. Weak cleaveEliminating a single powerful enemy
Thunder HammerSlowestHighest damage and cleave of the 5. Charged slam hits a wide area. Leaves you exposed if mistimedCrowd control, charged attacks in boss fights

2. How to Get Melee Weapons

Picking Up Weapons Mid-Mission

Weapons are placed throughout each mission map. Approach one and a prompt will appear to swap it with whatever you currently have equipped in that slot. Dropped weapons stay where they are, so you can always go back and pick them up.

Selecting Your Loadout in the Armoury

Once you complete the first mission (Skyfire), you’ll gain access to the Armoury aboard the Battle Barge, where you can set your loadout before each deployment. New weapons unlock as you progress through the campaign, and you can check unlock requirements on the loadout screen. Note that some missions may restrict available weapons for story reasons.

3. Core Combat Mechanics

The key to surviving in Space Marine 2 is aggressive defense. Rather than absorbing hits, the game rewards you for using parries and executions to actively recover your armor while fighting.

MechanicHow to TriggerEffect
ParryPress block just before an enemy’s blue-glow attack landsInstantly kills small enemies + restores 1 armor segment. Against elites: reduces their defense by 50% for 2.2 seconds + opens a Gun Strike opportunity
Perfect DodgeDodge at the exact moment of a red-glow attack (unparriable)Opens a Gun Strike opportunity. Tighter timing window than parrying, but works against all attack types
ExecutionApproach an enemy that is flashing red and press the execution buttonInstantly restores 1 armor segment. You are invincible during the animation. Executing a Tyranid Warrior causes nearby smaller enemies to die
Gun StrikeAfter a successful parry or perfect dodge, fire your sidearm when a red targeting marker appears over the enemy’s head (no aim required)Deals heavy burst damage. Restores 1 armor segment if it lands the killing blow

Red-glow attacks cannot be parried. When you see an enemy flash red before attacking, dodge instead. A perfectly timed dodge will open up a Gun Strike, the same as a parry would.

How to set up an Execution: An enemy needs to be weakened to the point where it starts flashing red. You can get there by shooting it multiple times, landing repeated melee hits, throwing a grenade, or parrying a weakened enemy’s blue-glow attack.

4. Combat Patterns and Tips

The most common mistake new players make is spamming the attack button. Space Marine 2’s melee combat is built around a rhythm of switching between ranged and melee — learning that flow is what makes the difference.

Core Combat Loop

  1. Weaken the enemy group with ranged fire while closing in
  2. Parry the first blue-glow attack → follow up with a Gun Strike
  3. Continue melee until the enemy is in a weakened state (flashing red)
  4. Execute to finish the enemy → armor restored
  5. Switch back to ranged once your armor is recovered and repeat

Situational Tips

When surrounded by large groups of small enemies — Prioritize parrying. Small enemies (Minoris) die instantly from a parry and restore your armor at the same time. Since you’re invincible during execution animations, deliberately going for executions in a crowd is a legitimate survival strategy.

In a 1v1 against a strong enemy (Warrior-class or above) — Parry the blue-glow attacks to reduce their defense, then stack damage with Gun Strikes. Once they’re flashing red, execute to finish them off. For red-glow attacks, dodge instead — land a Perfect Dodge and follow immediately with a Gun Strike.

When Your Health Is Low

When you take health damage, a white bar appears on your health meter. That white bar represents health you can recover — but only if you deal damage before it disappears. In other words, the more desperate the situation, the more aggressive you need to be.

MethodConditionEffect
Deal damage (melee or ranged)While the white bar is still visibleRecovers health equal to the size of the white bar. Act fast — the white bar fades quickly
ExecutionExecute a flashing red enemyRecovers a large portion of the white bar. The fastest health recovery option in a crisis
Keep your armor upLand executions and Gun Strikes consistentlyAs long as armor is active, your health bar won’t take damage. Armor management is the foundation of health management
Medicae StimmFound throughout the mission map, carry up to 2Directly restores health regardless of the white bar. Save these for emergencies
