Parrying Isn’t Just Button Mashing
In Space Marine 2, parrying is far more than a defensive tool. Done right, it restores armor, executes elite enemies instantly, and clears crowds in a single motion — it’s an offensive survival mechanic.
This guide assumes you know the basics (PS: L1 / Xbox: LB / PC: C key). The focus here is the next step: landing Perfect Parries consistently.
1. Two Outcomes: Normal Parry vs Perfect Parry
Every parry attempt results in one of two outcomes.
| Category | Normal Parry | Perfect Parry |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Forgiving | Precise window required |
| Minoris enemies | Instant kill + 1 armor segment restored | Same |
| Majoris enemies+ | Stagger | Stagger + Gun Strike available |
| Enemy damage taken | — | +50% damage for 2.2 seconds |
A successful Perfect Parry places a red target icon over a Majoris enemy’s head. Fire without aiming to trigger a Gun Strike.
2. The Key: Parry Timing Is About Animation, Not Input
The most common mistake is pressing the button the moment a blue indicator appears.
The parry system doesn’t judge your button press — it judges when your character’s parry animation completes. That completion window is called the parry window (판정 구간). The sequence is:
- Block motion begins (button pressed)
- Character raises arm into the blocking pose
- → This is the actual Perfect Parry window
This means you need to press the button about one second before the attack lands. Press too late and you get a normal block — or a hit.
Summary: The blue indicator is a signal, not the trigger. Time your press to the enemy’s attack, not the glow.
3. Minoris vs Majoris: Different Rules
Minoris Enemies (Hormagaunts, Termagants, etc.)
- Very wide parry window
- Pressing the button as the blue indicator appears is enough
- Successful parry: instant kill animation + 1 armor segment restored
- Leaping enemies (Gargoyles, etc.) trigger a catch animation → grants invincibility frames
Majoris Enemies (Tyranid Warriors, Raveners, etc.)
- Much tighter Perfect Parry window
- You need to read the attack animation to hit the right timing
- Some combo attacks require multiple parries before a stagger triggers
4. Weapon Defence Types: Fencing vs Balanced vs Block
In Operations mode, your melee weapon’s Defence Type determines how parrying works.
Fencing (Recommended)
- Widest parry window of the three types
- Window opens from the very first frame of animation → react and parry immediately
- Best choice for intermediate players building consistent parry habits
- Maximizes perks tied to Perfect Parry
- Drawbacks: Stagger radius is only 2m, so crowd-clearing efficiency is lower. Classes that rely on melee for primary damage (Assault, Bulwark) may take a stat hit — choose carefully
Balanced
- Narrower window than Fencing
- Important: The parry window starts with a slight delay after the animation begins → harder to parry fast follow-up attacks
- Stagger radius of 4.5m — better for crowd control than Fencing
- Good upgrade path once you’ve built parry fundamentals
Block
- Perfect Parry not possible
- Instead: land a melee hit after a Perfect Block to gain Adrenaline Surge (max 2 stacks)
- 1 stack: +30% melee damage, 60% ranged damage reduction (2.4 sec)
- 2 stacks: +90% melee damage
- Most effective on Bulwark or high-damage melee builds
Bottom line: Start with a Fencing weapon. Once comfortable, Balanced is a viable step up for its wider stagger radius. Block is a niche choice outside of dedicated builds.
5. Unblockable Attacks: Red Means Dodge
Attacks with a red indicator cannot be parried. You must dodge to avoid them.
- Dodge sideways, not backward. A backward dodge often leaves you inside the hitbox, especially against sweeping attacks
- A Perfect Dodge also opens a Gun Strike opportunity
- Dodge charges are limited — don’t waste them on Minoris enemies
6. After the Parry: Gun Strike → Execution
Perfect Parry → red target icon appears → fire without aiming
- Gun Strike either kills outright or puts the enemy into an execution state (flashing red)
- Successful execution: +1 armor segment
- Downed enemies can receive follow-up Gun Strikes
The armor recovery loop:
Parry → Gun Strike → Execution → Armor restored → Parry the next enemy
Once this loop clicks, you can sustain armor reliably even on high difficulties.
7. Class-Specific Notes
- Bulwark: Parry timing feels slightly different from other classes. The system checks for block before parry, so holding the button too long registers as a block. Don’t rely on muscle memory from other classes — practice Bulwark timing separately.
- Operations Perks: Perks like Defensive Mastery can instantly incapacitate enemies after a successful parry. Always check your perk loadout.
8. Difficulty Recommendations
| Difficulty | Parry Strategy |
|---|---|
| Minimal / Average | Learn timing with Fencing weapons |
| Substantial | Start memorizing Majoris attack patterns |
| Ruthless | Complete the parry loop, conserve dodge charges |
| Lethal | Perfect Parry or die. No margin for error |
Wrap-Up
Parrying in Space Marine 2 is about reading the attack, not reacting to the glow. The blue indicator is a heads-up, not the cue to press. Watch the enemy animation and time your input to the moment the parry window opens.
Start with a Fencing weapon to build the habit, then work up the difficulty as you learn each Majoris attack pattern. Once the parry loop becomes second nature, the game transforms into something else entirely.
